Los Angeles is going through hell right now. As I write this, more than 100,000 people are displaced by the fires that began ravaging our city a week ago. Everyone I know either knows someone who lost everything or lost everything themselves. It’s surreal.
I thought I’d share some ways you can help out, be it from afar or locally. There are many, many more groups in need of donations, but I’m highlighting just a few so as not to overwhelm anybody.
Corita Art Center: This small organization preserves and promotes the artwork of Corita Kent, a pop artist nun whose work was deeply political. They’re assembling Corita-inspired art kits for displaced families, providing kids with a creative outlet during this awful time. I’m helping them out this weekend.
Pasadena Humane: A nonprofit group that’s caring for hundreds of pets and wildlife affected by the Eaton fire.
LAFD Foundation: Provides support to firefighters from the under-funded Los Angeles Fire Department.
A huge list of GoFundMes:
Mutual Aid Los Angeles Network Resource List: An amazing, regularly updated spreadsheet with tons of volunteer opportunities and resources. This is coming in very handy at the library, as patrons seek out ways to help.
I hope this was useful. Stay safe, everybody.
I looked through Corita Kent's art and it's really cool. I hope you're alright.
Love this ❤️🩹
